DESN 2300 | Type Dialogues
2023

Project Description and Summary

This project focused on creating an experimental typeface by blending non-traditional materials, methods, or combining existing typefaces. The goal was to develop a unique font with a rich backstory, followed by a promotional campaign that showcased its commercial potential. Additionally, we were tasked with exploring the design and branding process through various deliverables, including a logo and identity package, and to understand how typefaces are marketed and used in real-world applications.

Process and Decisions

My custom typeface combines elements of a traditional serif font with hand-drawn lettering, resulting in a unique blend of professionalism and playfulness. The design maintains legibility while embracing a slightly messy, organic feel—akin to polished bubble letters with a creative twist. This balance allowed the typeface to feel approachable yet versatile, perfect for a variety of branding applications. The name Inkwell Grove came about unexpectedly. As I was working, my roommate watched the design process and remarked that the font had a tattoo-like aesthetic, imagining it as a perfect fit for a tattoo shop. Inspired by this observation, I decided to build a fictional brand around the concept of a tattoo studio named Inkblot Tattoo Shop. To bring this vision to life, I developed a cohesive brand identity. This included a custom logo that captured the essence of both creativity and craftsmanship, emphasizing the hand-drawn quality of the typeface. I also designed supporting materials such as business cards, letterheads, envelopes, and a canvas tote bag, each integrating the typeface seamlessly. The result was a fully realized brand concept that highlighted the typeface's flexibility and potential use in a real-world context.

Final Outcome

This project was incredibly rewarding and enjoyable to work on, leaving me with a sense of pride in the final result. The process was highly hands-on, involving extensive sketching and hand-drawing, as nearly every aspect of the typeface was manually drawn. This meticulous approach allowed for a deeper connection to the design, giving each letter a personal touch and unique character. One of the most valuable takeaways from this project was the realization that creating custom typefaces opens up endless creative possibilities. It has inspired me to design my own fonts in future projects, especially when I can't find the exact style I envision. This experience not only strengthened my skills in typography but also encouraged me to explore new ways of expressing ideas through type, pushing the boundaries of traditional design.
